“Dumb, cheap, colorful—common store labels and stickers are the stuff arranged in Bradley Wester’s work on canvas, paper, in plastic, or inside the computer. Re-ordering, re-contextualizing, framing, painting, laminating or digitizing preserves the functional, ephemeral forms even as they are transformed into lasting works of beauty. Though the work most conspicuously parallels the visual language of Pop Art, many pieces reveal references to such modernists as Klimt, Mondrian, Newman, Pollock, Stella, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Others echo Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Japanese Anime, and mimic the geometry of mandalas, and computer circuitry. The works share an inherent high/low tension—the banal mimicking the revered.”
